Root canal treatment / Endodontology

Root canal treatment - what is that?

Endodontology is the part of dentistry that deals with the structure of the inside of the tooth. Diseases can occur in the area of the tooth root and the surrounding area, which are treated by a dentist. Root canal treatment allows us to heal inflammation in the root area without having to remove the tooth.

Symptoms of root disease

Root diseases often develop over a longer period of time and become increasingly unpleasant for patients. The symptoms are among the most unpleasant complaints of all, as the pain is constant in advanced inflammation and lasts throughout the day and night. It usually begins with sensitivity to heat or cold, as well as occasional throbbing, which many patients understandably find very unpleasant. In addition, sufferers often complain about an unpleasant bad breath. This is caused by inflamed gum pockets in which bacteria can accumulate. In some cases, abscesses form which have to be surgically removed. Read more about this in the periodontology section.

Causes of root disease

Basically bacteria that find their way inside the tooth are the main cause of root disease. But how do bacteria get to the root of the tooth? The most common reason is a caries infection. The combination of dental plaque, poor oral hygiene and sugar consumption also favors the development of caries. Initially, the bacteria only form on the surface of the tooth, but the longer you do nothing about it, the deeper the infection spreads into the tooth. You can find more information on tooth decay here. If left untreated, periodontitis can also lead to an infection of the root. The inflamed tooth bed causes the gums to recede. This makes it easier for bacteria to reach the root. You can find more information on periodontitis here.

Procedure for root canal treatment

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure used to remove an infected or damaged tooth nerve and preserve the tooth.

The dentist begins with a thorough examination to assess the condition of the affected tooth. X-rays are used to determine the shape of the root canals and the degree of infection. Before the actual treatment begins, our dentist anesthetizes the affected area locally. This ensures that the patient does not feel any pain during the root canal treatment. Our dentist then places a rubber dam (rubber cloth) around the tooth to keep it dry and free of saliva. This prevents bacteria from entering the root canal. Now we drill a tiny opening in the tooth to gain access to the root canals. Our dentist then carefully removes the infected or damaged pulp (nerve and soft tissue) using special machine files and irrigation solutions.

We thoroughly rinse and expand the root canals with disinfectant solutions. After cleaning and disinfection, we fill the root canals with a biocompatible filling material, usually called gutta-percha, to protect them from re-infection. The access to the tooth is sealed with a filling material to restore and stabilize the tooth. We recommend checking the treated tooth at regular intervals to ensure that the root canal treatment was successful and that no re-infection occurs.
