Implantology involves the placement of dental implants in the bone of the upper and lower jaw. Replacing lost teeth is primarily about maintaining the chewing apparatus, but also about aesthetic aspects.
Simply using bridges is no longer the most effective method of closing gaps between teeth. Modern dentists are now increasingly taking the approach of also replacing the root of the tooth. This is much healthier for the teeth in the long term.
Although tooth loss is actually very easy to prevent these days, it happens more often than you might think. Over the course of a lifetime, people can lose teeth for a variety of reasons. Be it an accident, an illness or even the lack of oral hygiene. Molar teeth in particular are often affected by having to be extracted sooner or later. Many people assume that this is not such a bad thing, as molars are not directly visible. However, this completely ignores the effects that missing molars have on the chewing apparatus. Of course, the same also applies to missing teeth in the anterior region.
The gap between the teeth leads to long-term overloading of the masticatory apparatus and thus to accelerated tooth loss. Furthermore, the jawbone at the affected area is no longer challenged and atrophies (the bone shrinks due to lack of load). As a result, the soft tissue also recedes, which in turn causes the entire lower facial area to collapse. The result is that the face looks several years older.
A dental implant consists of three parts - the screw in the jawbone, the connecting piece and the tooth crown. The screw is the most important part of the implant because it is mainly responsible for maintaining the chewing apparatus. With the ceramic or titanium screws, we ensure that the tissue heals together with the screw after the procedure to ensure optimal and long-term retention. The connecting piece rests on the screw and supports the dental crown. The crown ensures a better quality of life for patients, as they feel almost indistinguishable from natural teeth in terms of mouth and wearing comfort.
All treatments begin with a thorough examination and anamnesis by our dentists. This is no different in implantology. In this field of treatment, it is particularly important to precisely analyze the condition of the dentition in order to assess the size and density of the jawbone. Based on this examination and assessment, the implantologist creates a treatment plan that is individually tailored to our patients' needs. This includes the number of implants required, their position, the type of implants and the time frame for the treatment. We then discuss the treatment plan in detail with our patients.
The implantation itself usually takes place in several stages. During the first operation, we insert the dental implant into the jawbone. This operation is usually performed under local anesthesia. Following implant placement, we give the jawbone enough time to heal and firmly integrate the implant into the bone. This process is called osseointegration and can take several months. After the osseointegration, our dentist places an abutment (small connecting pin) on the implant. This serves as an attachment point for the future dental crown. This is the customized dental prosthesis that is manufactured in the dental laboratory to fit onto the abutment. During and after the healing process, we carry out regular follow-up checks to ensure that the implant is successfully integrated and the denture is functioning properly.
